Much of the land on either side of the Beri Bandh embankment used to be a swamp, and most homes are built on stilts. The refuse from nearby tanneries and other factories are dumped here. Sewage water from homes and factories are also dumped in the stream which feeds into the nearby river. On a square foot basis, people living in these stilt homes pay higher rent than those in the apartment buildings at the back.
